…Applaud Gov Umo Eno’s Health Reforms, Demand Improved Welfare for Health Workers
Health stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State have reaffirmed their support for the proposed Ibom International Hospital, describing it as a defining milestone in the state’s healthcare delivery system.
The project was overwhelmingly endorsed during a post-town hall Press briefing held on Sunday, July 13, at Doctor’s Mess in Uyo.
The briefing followed the ARISE Health Sector Town Hall Meeting convened the previous day, Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Emerald Event Centre, Uyo. The event, organized by the State Ministry of Health on the directive of Governor Umo Eno, PhD, brought together over 20 professional associations, civil society organisations, labour unions, and lawmakers to deliberate on the ongoing health sector reforms.
In his opening remarks, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, outlined key reforms already in motion. These include the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme (AKSHIA), the revitalisation of Primary Health Centres (PHCs), the Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (AKISEMSAS) and the proposed Ibom International Hospital.
Presenting the blueprint for the 350-bed, nine-floor quaternary facility, project consultant Dr. Teinye Isokariari disclosed that the hospital will feature robotic theatres, multi-specialty departments, a helipad, a 2MW solar power plant, and fully automated smart systems.
Stakeholders unanimously welcomed the project, describing it as a turning point for medical tourism, specialist care and advanced research. They issued a joint communiqué endorsing the project, applauding its sustainability framework, including workforce training systems and eco-friendly architectural design.
Key resolutions adopted in the commique include:
*A call for an Executive Order mandating all residents and businesses to enroll in AKSHIA;
*Commendation of the revitalisation of PHCs and the impact of AKISEMSAS since its March launch;
*A demand for the expedited recruitment of 1,000 health workers, already approved by the state government;
*A strong appeal for a comprehensive welfare review for health workers, last reviewed in 2015, including rural incentives and scarce skill allowances;
*Advocacy for solar installations in general hospitals and a revolving loan scheme for the private health sector;
*A charge to the House of Assembly to accelerate the passage of health reform bills, including the establishment of a Drug Management Agency.
Stakeholders also praised the collaborative synergy between the Ministry of Health and the House Committee on Health, describing it as a model for effective governance and responsive policymaking.
The forum concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in Governor Umo Eno for his “visionary, people-first leadership,” and in the Commissioner for Health and his team for their dedication and results-driven performance.
