Maduka Okoye Suspended for Two Months Over Illegal Betting

Nigerian international and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension from football after being found guilty of involvement in illegal betting.

The ban, effective from August 18, 2025, follows an investigation into suspicious betting activity that yielded winnings of approximately ₦214 million. Okoye and three associates came under scrutiny after a March 11, 2024 Serie A match between Udinese and Lazio, during which Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute while Udinese led 2-1..

Authorities noticed an unusual surge in bets placed on Okoye receiving that yellow card, with payouts totaling over €120,000, mostly from the Udine region. The incident prompted a formal investigation, and by June 2025, the case was referred to a disciplinary panel.

Although there were initial concerns that Okoye could face a four-year ban for sporting fraud, the final ruling found him guilty solely of illegal betting, resulting in a significantly lighter penalty.

His suspension begins with Udinese’s Coppa Italia match against Carrarese and will sideline him for the first six Serie A matches of the 2025/26 season. He will be eligible to return on October 19.

The 25-year-old, who has 18 caps for Nigeria, joined Udinese in 2023 after playing for Watford. While the decision brings an end to the legal process, it marks a significant setback for Okoye’s career and reputation as he enters an important season for both club and country.
